Dreaming of trekking mountain gorillas in Uganda or heading into our rich forests for a real wildlife adventure? The Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) has just rolled out a few welcome changes to make your visit easier and even more rewarding.
On April 14, 2026, Dr. James Musinguzi, UWA’s Executive Director, shared some good news for visitors and tour operators.
The focus is on simpler payments, more chances to see mountain gorillas, and a brand-new, rare wildlife experience.
Here’s what’s new:
Faster, More Reliable Payment System at UWA Headquarters
We’ve added a new Inplant Machine at our Reservations Office in Kampala to handle cash payments for permits and bookings more smoothly.
Key Details:
- Operating Hours: Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. | Saturday, 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.
- Payments show up in our system within 24 hours.
- Once the bank confirms it, we process your booking right away.
The new system makes things clearer and cuts down on delays. Just be sure to plan ahead and give your payment time to clear before your trekking date.
Two New Habituated Gorilla Groups in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
Gorilla trekking enthusiasts have even more reasons to smile! Two additional fully habituated gorilla groups have now been added to our official booking system:
- Happy Group – Located in the Buhoma Sector
- Nshanjare Group – Located in the Rushaga Sector
These groups were previously operating on a limited “extra permit” basis. Now fully integrated, they increase the daily trekking slots available in Bwindi. This means more visitors will have the chance to experience the magical encounter with Uganda’s endangered mountain gorillas.
Tip for visitors: Always check real-time availability on the UWA booking portal and reserve your gorilla permit as early as possible, as they continue to book up quickly.
New Golden Cat Tracking Experience in Kibale National Park
For those who love rare and intimate wildlife moments, we are thrilled to launch golden cat tracking in the Kanyanchu area of Kibale National Park (along Ngogo Road).
The African golden cat is one of the most elusive and striking small cats in the world. This low-impact tracking activity offers a special opportunity for dedicated wildlife lovers, photographers, researchers, and naturalists to search for this beautiful forest dweller.
How to Book & Important Information:
- Booking is currently available on the ground only (not yet in the online system)
- We recommend reserving 24 to 48 hours in advance
- Cost: $350 per person for a five-day tracking window
- Visitors should bring their own guide; UWA rangers will provide support
This experience is designed to be respectful of the animal’s natural behavior while giving participants a deeper connection with Kibale’s incredible biodiversity.
Why These Changes Matter
At UWA, we are continuously working to improve visitor services while keeping conservation and sustainability at the heart of everything we do. These updates reflect our commitment to delivering better experiences, protecting Uganda’s unique wildlife, and ensuring our national parks remain world-class destinations.
Whether you’re planning a classic gorilla trek in the misty forests of Bwindi or seeking something truly special like golden cat tracking in Kibale, these improvements will help make your Uganda safari planning easier and your memories richer.
Helpful Booking Tips
- Book your gorilla permits early through the UWA system or a trusted authorized tour operator.
- Factor in the 24-hour payment processing time with the new system.
