9 Days Mount Rwenzori Trekking Safari in Uganda – Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: Transfer to Rwenzori
After breakfast, embark on the drive to Ruwenzori National Park. You will drive through the lush country side traversing the rural towns of Mityana, Mubende before approaching Fort portal and eventually Kasese in the afternoon. You will have lunch en route while the magical sights of Ruwenzori Mountains will welcome you at distance.
Drive distance: 440km Drive time: 7hrs
Accommodation: Equator Snow Lodge (Luxury/upmarket), Ruboni Community Camp (Basic/budget) or Mihunga safari Lodge (Midrange/standard).
Day 2: Climb From Nyakalengija to Nyabitaba Hut
After having breakfast, you will gather at Nyakalengija for briefing about the forthcoming adventure that will see you eventually summit the 5,109m Margarita peak. Depart Nyakalengija for 4 – 5 hour climb up to Nyabitaba hut (2,652m). You will cross River Mahoma amidst bird sights and proceed through the Bakonjo farmlands and settlement areas before approaching the a bit raised slopes of Ruwenzori Mountains to rest for overnight at Nyabitaba hut.
Day 3: Climb From Nyabitaba Hut to John Matte Hut
Embark on the trek through the Bamboo forest and the steepy rocky area. You will cross the Kurt Shaffer Bridge and traverse the muddy slopes along Mubuku River passing by Nyamuleju hut. You will eventually arrive at John Matte hut (3,414m) after 5 – 6 hours of climb.
Day 4: Climb From John Matte Hut to Bujuku Hut
Embark on the climb crossing the Bujuku River and traverse the low grassed Bigo bog. The jumps between the tussocks make it interesting before approaching Bujuku hut (3,962m) about 4 – 5 hours for overnight.
Day 5: Climb From Bujuku Hut to Elena Hut
This takes you through moss draped groundsel vegetation amidst Mt. Stanley and Mt. Baker, passing by Scott Elliot at 4,372m before approaching St. Elena Hut (4,541m) to mark the end of the central circuit. You will have an overnight at Elena hut.
Day 6: Climb from Elena hut to Margarita peak & then to Lake Kitandara hut
Embark on the trek to Margarita peak 5,109m which is covered by snow. It is a whole day climb after which you will summit the Margarita peak. You will descend to Lake Kitandara hut (4,023) for overnight.
Day 7: Descend From Lake Kitandara to Guy Yeoman Hut
Descend to Guy Yeoman’s hut 3,261m about 5 – 6 hours. You will enjoy the stunning views of Democratic Republic of Congo, rock shelters of Kabamba and Bujongolo before resting for overnight at Guy yeoman.
Day 8: Descend From Guy Yeoman Hut to Nyakalengija
Descend from Guy Yeoman hut to Nyakalengija about 5 – 6 hours. You will pass by the Mubuku valley and Kichuchu River amidst great lush of montane flora. Arrive at Nyakalengija where you will go to your lodge for relaxation and overnight.
Accommodation: Equator Snow Lodge (Luxury/upmarket), Ruboni Community Camp (Basic/budget) or Mihunga safari Lodge (Midrange/standard).
Day 9: Transfer Back to Kampala.
After a relaxed breakfast embark on the transfer to Kampala. You will pass through the rewarding views of Fort Portal area and Mubende inselbergs. Have lunch en route before continuing to arrive in Kampala in the afternoon.
